Day 39 Leaving Xian

After a sleep in and then breakfast at the sister hostel with Internet
down the road. We spent the afternoon wondering Xi'an city, stocked up
on noodles and biscuits and milk for my coffee on the train leaving
this evening. Took in a couple of sights, the Bell tower and the Drum
tower. We went up the drum tower for a look about,it had plenty of
drums some bigger than me and it was very well decorated inside with
both furniture and the colourful painting. The story very basically,
the drum tower was for the hours of darkness they would announce each
of the 3 segments with drums and the Bell tower the opposite, drums
would also sound for dawn and opening of city wall gates etc.
Had a nice and cheap feed in the Muslim quarter of kebabs and breads
then grabbed our bags for the bus to the train. It was an hour before
our train but we missed the 1st bus & got the next. on arrival we
thought the square out front looked less busy than yesterday. On
asking a policeman where our entrance was we discovered a massive
queue to get in! Flashed our tickets again at that queue and got
escorted through the fast route, inside an English speaking helper
directed us to our gate as we went up the 10's of thousands inside
became apparent. At our gate they had nearly completed boarding so
lucky we made it.
On board we made an entrance everyone seated & no room for our bags,
but a couple of guys got up to help and one managed a "please sit
down". It's another cramped cattle class seat.
The group we sat with were very nice and keen to learn a bit of
English which provided a few hours entertainment pointing on maps and
translating words.
