Met Silvia and Max last night who are staying in our hostel and have the same night booked in Bako as us. We all set out early to be on the first bus to the park at 7am. After an hours bus ride we arrived at the jetty where we got a 20 minute boat ride to the park. We saw a sea eagle trying to catch fish while coming up to Bako on the boat. Silvia and I really wanted to see the endangered proboscis monkeys so that was the main aim.
Upon arrival we saw some macaques monkeys hanging out near the park headquarters. We checked into our room for the night and started out on the Telok Paku trail which ended on a small beach. We saw just a few insects and spiders on this trail. We then started out on the Lintang small loop trail which took us about 5 hours to complete. We still hadn't managed to see the proboscis monkeys but saw bearded pigs, lots more insects, pitcher plants, butterflies and some nice plants.
We walked along the plank walk heading to the beach once we finished the Lintang trail and there we saw our first Proboscis monkeys eating in the trees that lined the beach. It was fantastic! We also saw a large monitor lizard while walking to park headquarters, he was a fast mover and had darted into a bush as we approached so we only managed to get photos of him under the bush.
We went on a night walk which was brilliant! We saw an enormous stick insect, scorpion, cat fish, mouse dear which is a type of cat, sleeping birds ( kingfisher, swallows in a nest and a few others), frogs, centipede, spiders, large cricket eating a worm, fire flies, Cicada and many other types of strange insects
Our first day at Bako was a great success!
